Members' Meeting August 2010
Enjoying creative time with Yvonne de Mille
Wellington Members enjoyed a special August meeting with local artist Yvonne de Mille. A qualified Facilitator and Life Coach, Yvonne (pictured at left, on left, with Wellington Support Coordinator Elva Phillips) was born in the UK and settled in New Zealand in 1974.
She has only recently turned her hand to painting, using mostly acrylics and water colours and is influenced by the beauty to be found in nature and the cultural motifs of New Zealand and the Pacific.
Yvonne conducted a painting workshop with Members, focusing on the elements of water and air. She encouraged the use of flowing, gentle strokes and everyone came up with a picture featuring birds or dolphins.
"It was very relaxing," said Support Coordinator Elva Phillips. "Members were quite lost in their own thoughts while applying the water colors, which was lovely."
Wellington Member meetings are well known for the delicious refreshments served! The women enjoyed tea and coffee, a selection of club sandwiches, spanokopita, some very lovely biscotti and almond cranberry biscuits and fruit - pineapple, kiwifruit, grapes - much enjoyed by all!
Three new Members attended the meeting and they were made to feel welcome right away with plenty of friendly chatter and laughter.
Some Wellington Members had recently attended an evening with international cooking celebrity Rick Stein. All thoroughly enjoyed the event and said that Rick sent several platters of food to where they were sitting so they could sample the delicious fare!
Members' Meeting 17 July 2010
Sharing the warmth of friendship on a wintry afternoon! This report from Wellington Support Coordinator Elva Phillips
While the weather may have been cold and blustery, the atmosphere at the July Members' Meeting was warm and welcoming! It was a smaller turn out than usual due to the end of the school holidays and other Members involved with family events but those who attended enjoyed the usual delicious afternoon tea at the Wellesley Boutique Hotel - tea, coffee, juice, club sandwiches, fresh fruit (pineapple, grapes, rock melon, watermelon, kiwifruit), spanokpita and yummy hazelnut chocolate biscuits.
All the Members present had been to see Swan Lake on the Wednesday night prior and absolutely raved about the show! It made for spectacular viewing and the Members were very appreciative that they could give tickets to family and friends so all could enjoy the show together.
There was no presenter this week so we sat around the table and chatted, as a group of girls can do so well! The room was lovely and warm and the mood was very close as we welcomed a new Member who was diagnosed with secondary cancer three weeks ago. Each Member shared about family, work, the journey with cancer, offering support to our new Member and sharing ideas and tips that could help during this difficult time - for example having a support person answer the phone calls, send out regular emails and generally help out over the next few weeks until she meets with her oncologist to discuss the diagnosis and treatment options.
We chatted about good books and movies and the importance of setting goals, keeping the mind active and to stop worrying about things and keep up the enjoyable activities (like walking!), doing what you want to do until your oncologist tells you something different! We also discussed support available for teenagers e.g. Skylight and counselling options.
The hotel was abuzz as we were leaving! Wedding guests were arriving and photographers were snapping photos - plenty of excitement in the air!
Sweet Louise Welcome Pack Launches in Wellington Saturday 26 June 2010
The new Sweet Louise Welcome Pack was launched in Wellington on Saturday 26 June with a special afternoon tea and presentation from guest speaker author Phil Kerslake. The Pack was launched in Auckland at a similar event on 30 May.
Over 45 people enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of friendship and fellowship. Sweet Louise Members were joined by their families and friends, Sweet Louise Friends and volunteers. Guests partook of a delicious selection of fruit muffins, finger sandwiches, Anzac biscuits with hot tea and coffee.
Sweet Louise CEO Sue Brewster opened the afternoon, introducing herself and paying a warm tribute to Jennifer Clark. Phil Kerslake gave an inspirational presentation, sharing his life and cancer journey, trials and tribulations of treatment and being proactive when dealing with health professionals. Phil also mentioned excerpts from his book Life, Happiness ... and Cancer.
Auckland Support Coordinator Sinda Hall introduced the Welcome Packs and every Member received one on their departure.
Those Members who could not attend will receive their Pack by post.
Members' Meeting 17 April 2010
Footsies in Wellington!
It was all about feet at the Wellington Members' April meeting as local reflexologists Marcia Pollock and Maryanne Hooper offered delightful ‘footsie' sessions that were much enjoyed by all who attended.
Reflexology is a popular therapy offered to Sweet Louise Members. Practioners work on the feet or hands to help restore and maintain the body's natural balance and encourage recovery. Such treatments can help reduce the frequency, impact and intensity of treatment side effects, lower levels of pain and anxiety and improve sleep. More information on the potential benefits of reflexology can be found in the research paper on this site.
As always, The Wellesley Boutique Hotel provided a delicious lunch - spanakopita, sandwiches and fresh fruit followed by tea and coffee. We extend a grateful ‘thank you' to Manager Roger Chapman and Functions Coordinator Clarissa for their warm hospitality and for always making our Sweet Louise meetings so special.
The next Members' meeting is Wednesday, May 12th, 1030 to 1215. Morning tea will be provided. Our speaker will be Nutritionist Sarah Beesley from the Self Heal Clinic in Greytown. She will speak about optimum health.
Members' Meeting 13 March 2010
Absolutely positively passionate about Shiatsu!
This report from Wellington Support Coordinator Elva Phillips
Sweet Louise Wellington Members met on Saturday 13 March to enjoy fellowship and a visit from Shiatsu Massage Therapist Maree Pryme. As always, the ladies loved catching up with each other. Lots to talk about with plenty of laughter and sharing of stories and experiences. The group welcomed three new Members and the time together seemed to go by incredibly fast
Guest speaker Shiatsu Massage Therapist Maree Pryme (pictured at left) qualifed in 1995 from the European Shiatsu School. She had her own business in London from 2000-2008, studied Acupuncture in Bristol and furthered her knowledge in this area by working in Shanghai Hospital.
Maree is a mobile therapist covering an area from Foxton Beach to Wellington, including the Wairarapa. This is of particular appeal to Members because they can receive treatment in the comfort of their own home. Maree will massage wherever the client is most comfortable (perhaps in a chair or lying down) and is able to moderate her massage to suit client physical needs.
Maree works part time for Mary Potter Hospice, treating patients, family members and staff and is absolutely positively passionate about Shiatsu! She has a wonderful energy and Desiree was the willing recipient of a chair massage. Members had a number of questions about the therapy which Maree was keen to answer. She also demonstrated some handy pressure points to help relieve nausea, headaches and fatigue.
When the Wellington ladies get together, laughter and companionship is always on the menu along with the delicious lunch provided by the wonderful staff at the Wellesley Boutique Hotel. If you would like to know more about Sweet Louise in Wellington, please call the Support Coordinators on 0800 11 22 77 for information.
Wellington Members celebrate friendships at Christmas lunch (2009)
The Wellington Sweet Louise Members enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Christmas and friendship with a delicious lunch on 19 December at The Wellesley Boutique Hotel in Maginnity St, Wellington. The restaurant prepared a special two course Christmas menu and the management of the beautiful heritage hotel closed the restaurant from 1145 - 2pm, especially for them!
Elva Phillips (Wellington Support Coordinator) hoped to arrange some live music for the lunch but her search was fruitless until a chance meeting with Beverley Holder (National Administrator, NZ Music Examinations Board) at a Charities Commission Forum. Beverley felt she could help so approached 17 year old college student Chloe Garret to see if she would like to play for the special Christmas event. The answer was a very enthusiastic ‘Yes!' "Chloe (pictured at right) played a variety of classical pieces for us and it was beautiful," said Elva. "She played for about 15 minutes and it was just lovely."
The decoration of the Christmas table was a team effort. Kristine picked two bunches of gorgeous flowers from her Waikanae garden. Each guest attending received a Christmas Angel. The Petone Bead Shop donated the beads and staff from the shop, friends and family of Member Elizabeth and Member Shirl made the Angels. Elizabeth and friends and Sweet Louise Member Angela made special Christmas Crackers. Inside each one was a special verse or inspirational quote.
The Christmas lunch was much enjoyed by all, offering a wonderful way for Sweet Louise Wellington Members to enjoy good company, great food and music and to celebrate the joys of friendship.
